Alan Saliman Family Papers

Abstract The history of the Saliman family in the Denver area dates to the immigration of the family patriarch Paul Michael Saliman (known as Michael.) As did most Jewish families, Michael and his wife Bessie Radetsky Saliman settled on the west side near Sloan's Lake in 1886. Paul Michael pushed a cart through the alleys of Denver collecting rags and junk to re-sell, finally developing a business of collecting, cleaning and recycling milk bottles for local dairies. The American Jewish Committee is a global Jewish advocacy organization established in 1906 in response to recent anti-Semitism and pogroms Russia. It aims to defend Jewish civil rights. Collection contains by-laws, minutes, agendas, membership information, programs, publications, photographs, awards, certificates, and business plans related to the American Jewish Committee Colorado Chapter from 1967 through 2013 when the chapter's Denver branch was closed.

Bercu Gross Family Collection

Abstract

The material in the collection includes items, photographs, and papers related to Dorothy Bercu Gross and her husband Norman Gross, her extended family, and her Vaudeville career in the 1920s and 1930s. Her father owned the Chicago Hide, Fur and Wool Company in Douglas, Wyoming and Denver, Colorado. The collection spans from the late 1800s to 2015 and illustrates an extended Jewish family and vaudeville performers.

Abstract

Collection consists of commercial semi-glossy photographs pasted into four albums half-bound in leather, with raised spines and gilt stamping. Most are captioned with place or building name in white lettering (from black ink on the negative) with some captions on the album page handwritten in pencil.

Congregation Zera Israel Records and Scrapbooks

Abstract

Congregation Zera Israel (the Descendants of Israel) was organized on May 1, 1921 in a storefront, as a Lithuanian Orthodox synagogue. It was one of the Orthodox synagogues of West Denver. Rabbi Arthur L. Fine became the leader in 1979 and Morris B. Sapper and Julius Berger were presidents of the congregation. The collection contains Articles of Incorporation, Scrapbooks and Photographs, Events and Memorials.

Denver Chapter of Hadassah Records

The Denver Chapter of Hadassah was organized in 1915. Hadassah is a Zionist organization that combine the Jewish emphasis on social welfare with the ideology of Zionism. The Denver Chapter continues to support Israel and to promote health awareness, education, and Zionist youth programs. The minutes, programs, publications, and scrapbooks and scrapbooks reflect the history of a Jewish women's organization with programs in Israel and Denver.

Dolores S. Atencio (b. 1955) graduated from Colorado College in 1977, and in 1980 received her JD from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Atencio later became the first Visiting Scholar for the University of Denver Latino Center for Community Engagement & Scholarship, to complete her project on the country’s earliest Latina lawyers licensed in the United States. Collection consists of papers and other materials related to the work and career of University of Denver.
